Gold maintained a modest gain following President Donald Trump’s comments expressing optimism over ongoing US-Iran talks, which aim to resolve a conflict that has fueled inflationary concerns and increased the likelihood of higher interest rates. The precious metal, a traditional safe haven, saw its price movements closely tied to geopolitical developments and upcoming monetary policy decisions.
Geopolitical Easing Supports Bullion
Bullion was observed near $4,065 an ounce, building on a 0.6% advance from the previous session. President Trump stated there was ‘a good chance that something could happen’ regarding a potential deal, a sentiment that appeared to alleviate immediate prospects of military escalation in the Middle East. However, Trump also cautioned that a return to conflict was likely if negotiations failed to yield a resolution.
This diplomatic overture had broader market implications, with oil extending a drop on Tuesday. This followed Washington’s decision to refrain from attacking Iran for a third consecutive day, reciprocated by Tehran’s pause in strikes on countries around the Persian Gulf. Concurrently, negotiators from Iran and Oman are reportedly working towards an agreement to restart shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that historically carried a fifth of daily global oil flows.
Gold’s Resilience and Investor Positioning
Despite the recent geopolitical volatility, gold has consistently hovered near the $4,000 an ounce mark since late June. A consistent wave of ‘dip-buying’ has largely kept the metal above this psychological threshold in recent weeks, indicating sustained investor interest. Reinforcing this underlying support, bullion-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have added holdings for five consecutive days, marking their longest streak of gains since May.
Nevertheless, gold remains down by more than a fifth since the war commenced five months ago, reflecting the initial shock and subsequent market adjustments. Traders are now keenly positioning themselves ahead of a potentially contentious interest rate decision by the Federal Reserve later this week. Policymakers face a dilemma, balancing June’s tamer-than-expected reading on US consumer prices against the more recent rise in energy costs, which was exacerbated by renewed fighting in the Middle East.
Fed Decision Looms with High Uncertainty
The market’s anticipation for the Fed’s decision is unusually high, with interest-rate swaps implying approximately a 40% chance of a quarter-point increase on Wednesday. This level of uncertainty is notably elevated compared to recent years leading up to a Federal Reserve announcement. Prominent financial institutions are weighing in, with Citadel Securities publicly stating its expectation for a rate hike this week. The firm argues that such a move would bolster Chairman Kevin Warsh’s credibility in the ongoing battle against inflation.
As of 8:15 a.m. in Singapore, spot gold registered a slight slip of 0.3% to $4,065.32 an ounce. Other precious metals also saw minor declines, with silver edging down 0.3% to $58.19 an ounce. Platinum and palladium also traded lower. Concurrently, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index, a key gauge of the US currency’s strength, rose by 0.1%, reflecting broader currency market movements.
