Artificial intelligence (AI) developer Anthropic has declared its intention to commit 5% of its shares to a newly established fund dedicated to making donations for the ‘public good’. This strategic announcement precedes a potential blockbuster stock market listing for the company, which analysts suggest could value the firm at more than $1 trillion (£750 billion).
The proposed Public Benefit Fund, as detailed by Anthropic, aims to support nonprofit organizations and initiatives addressing the societal and economic impacts of AI, particularly on the jobs market. Crucially, the company specified that none of the shares held by this fund would be utilized for lobbying or political donations, either domestically in the US or internationally. Furthermore, Anthropic indicated that an additional 2% of the firm’s shares could be allocated to the fund at the discretion of its board.
This move by the Claude developer comes amidst heightened scrutiny of the AI industry, driven by growing concerns over safety and the technology’s broader implications for society and the economy. Anthropic itself reportedly acknowledged these risks in its initial public offering (IPO) filing, stating that AI could pose ‘catastrophic or existential risks to humanity’. Research published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2024 suggests that nearly 40% of jobs globally will be affected by AI, with this figure potentially rising to 60% in advanced economies.
Financially, Anthropic recently informed prospective investors of a significant revenue surge, reporting a 45% increase to $16.8 billion (£12.6 billion) in the three months ending September. This performance underscores a trend among AI firms to demonstrate substantial profit generation, even as they invest billions in technology development and infrastructure. Despite these investments, many technology firms globally have cut thousands of jobs, citing increased efficiencies from AI adoption.
The announcement drew a public response from technology billionaire Elon Musk, who commented on social media, “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public.” He added, “This is what I will be doing.” Anthropic’s commitment represents a notable pre-IPO maneuver, positioning the company as one that is proactively addressing the broader societal implications of its rapidly advancing technology, even as it seeks a high valuation in public markets.
