EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic commenced two days of critical talks in Beijing this Thursday, directly confronting his Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao on what he termed an “unsustainable trade deficit.” Sefcovic explicitly stated his primary objective for the visit: “rebalancing” the significant imbalance in goods trade between the European Union and China.
A particular area of concern highlighted by the EU envoy is the automotive sector. Recent data indicates a substantial shift, with Chinese hybrid vehicles now commanding a 25 percent share of the European market. This rapid increase in market penetration by Chinese manufacturers is a key factor contributing to the growing trade deficit that Sefcovic aims to address during his discussions.
The high-stakes visit underscores the EU’s proactive stance in managing its economic relationship with China. Sefcovic’s engagement with Wang Wentao over the two-day period is expected to delve into the specifics of this deficit, seeking mechanisms and commitments to foster a more equitable trading environment.
