Latin America is navigating a period of heightened uncertainty, largely driven by the energy shock and economic headwinds stemming from the Iran war. However, the region is demonstrating significant resilience in the face of these challenges, according to Ilan Goldfajn, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Speaking to France 24, Goldfajn indicated that the IDB is receiving requests for ‘targeted support’ from Latin American nations. These requests primarily focus on critical areas such as energy diversification and addressing fertilizer needs, which have been impacted by global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical events.
The president’s assessment points to a complex economic environment where external shocks are creating volatility. Despite these pressures, the underlying capacity of Latin American economies to adapt and withstand adverse conditions remains a key factor. The IDB’s role is to facilitate this adaptation through strategic interventions and financial assistance.
Goldfajn’s remarks come at a time when global economic forecasts are being revised due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and their ripple effects. The focus on specific needs like energy and agriculture underscores the immediate priorities for the region as it seeks to maintain stability and foster growth.
